So, last night, I was in a workshop where we studied 'Rain, New Year's Eve' by Maggie Smith which I invite you to read at your leisure.
Within the poem, the speaker describes how she is learning to see the world through the eyes of her children. To me, there's something so magical about the section which recounts 'loving the world / means loving the wobbles / you can't shim, the creaks you can't / oil silent—the jerry-rigged parts, / MacGyvered with twine and chewing gum.'
I think it's something important to consider as we step into the new year. There's always a lot of year to 'review' the past year and invent a 'new you' for the new year.
I guess the prompt for this year is to consider how you view the world or how we can view the world.
An alternative prompt would be to think about language within your life. The entire poem is sparked by the speaker noting 'The rain is a broken piano, my five year old said that.' What one liners or turns of phrase have you heard that have changed you somehow?
I can't wait to see what you come up with!
