Here in the UK there are a whole number of National, county and even town/city poet laureates. As someone who admires them greatly, and would love to become a laureate someday, how important are they to you, and if not... what could they do to BE more relevant and respected in your eyes?

I am aware of 2 recent Poet Laureates in NSW Australia Sydney area. One was appointed by sydney city council in 2012 for 1 year on $50,000 but i don't think there was a second one. This year Parramatta council has appointed a person on $50,000. I can't remember the full wording but it involved 'literature and culture' . The politics of literature and culture in modern Australia is really ugly, she'll earn her 50,000
I like the idea of the Poet Laureate. It's relatively new here, in Canada. The mandate... "The Poet's role is to encourage and promote the importance of literature, culture and language in Canadian society. Federal legislators created the position in 2001 to draw Canadians' attention to poetry, both spoken and written, and its role in our lives." I'm not sure whose attention that want to garner, but most of the poets have been a little wrinkled, if you know what I mean. As a personna, they might appeal to the older folks. Sometimes, this is a position of politcal purpose. All good though.

I go back and forth with this. Laureates are crucial for showcasing language, for the most part. And in today's world, when kids are reading less and gaming more, keeping language alive is vital. But a Laureate most be active and immortalising today's world in their words.
