Good evening/morning/afternoon wherever you are, old friends and impending.
Life can be a little like poetry: it's brazen, distracting, sometimes we get stuck in a pattern or sometimes we trail off the page with our own thoughts.
How is everyone? What's been on your mind, come they be insigificant or in-depth?
Here is a moment to not over-think a response and just write whatever is on your mind. Overthinking can be crippling and a little harmful.

I've missed this little cave. How is everyone doing? What's new? What have you discovered about the world or yourself in the past couple of weeks? How are you feeling about stuff, in general. And are you ready for these chaotic neutrals? Will the past week inspire any poems?

Hi Covers, veteran and new <3 (tw: I'm about to make reference to a disgraced artist allegedly guilty of s*xual ab*se) I remember a Marilyn Manson song I use to listen to quite a bit (he's in the bad books now because of his alleged behaviour >:( so I apologise for referencing him here), but I just wanted to take a very brief moment to acknowledge a single line from his song 'Deep Six' which I found amazing (and makes me wish I penned the line myself): You wanna know what Zeus said to Narcissus? You'd betta watch yourself. Ugh, so good. Let's ignore the writer/singer, but when I first heard the line, it really moved me. It's got 'you don't know who you're dealing with. F*** you' vibes to it, and serves as a threatening reality check to whoever is planning to screw you over, but of course you will not let them get away with it. Can anyone else recall a line from film/music/literature/video games/public speeches, etc. that is so great and poetic, that you wish you had thought of it yourself? Honorable mentions to: I will remove the cause, but not the symptom from Rocky Horror. Share your thoughts!

Share your experiences, folks. Have you ever submitted your poems to a magazine? What was your experience, and what was the outcome, if there was any? Does it help with boosting your creative career, or gaining exposure, or are you just throwing your poems into the abyss before they experience their 15 minutes of fame? I was hoping your responses would assist a few people here. :)

Has anyone seen it? For those who don't know, it's a cooking show for amateurs who have to recreate elaborately designed desserts and the results are... far from satisfactory. This show made me realise that I haven't laughed so hard at anything so wholesome for so long. Here is one of my favourite moments from the series so far. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did:

Heya, Covers! Haven't we all listened to the lyrics of a song before and thought, 'damn, that's pure poetry!'? Well, here is the place to share the lyrics of your favourite tracks! I have a few too many hits to mention, but I thought I'd start with a song I recently discovered by Eartha Kitt, followed by a song I have raved on about before, 'Little Cream Soda' by The White Stripes. Enjoy the poetr- I mean, songs, and comment your favourites below! 'I Want To Be Evil' by Eartha Kitt I've posed for pictures with Iv'ry Soap
I've petted stray dogs, and shied clear of dope
My smile is brilliant, my glance is tender
But I'm noted most for my unspoiled gender
I've been made Miss Reingold, though I never touch beer
And I'm the person to whom they say, "You're sweet, my dear"
The only etchings I've seen have been behind glass
And the closest I've been to a bar was at ballet class
Prim and proper, the girl who's never been kissed
I'm tired of being pure and not chased
Like something that seeks it's level
I wanna go to the devil
I wanna be evil, I wanna spit tacks
I wanna be evil and cheat at jacks
I wanna be wicked, I wanna tell lies
I wanna be mean and throw mud pies
I want to wake up in the morning
With that dark brown taste
I wanna see some dissipation in my face
I wanna be evil, I wanna be mad
But more than that, I wanna be bad
I wanna be evil and trump an ace
Just to see my partner's face
I wanna be nasty, I wanna be cruel
I wanna be daring, I wanna shoot pool
And in the theatre, I want to change my seat
Just so I can step on everybody's feet
I wanna be evil, I wanna hurt flies
I wanna sing songs like the guy who cries
I wanna be horrid, I wanna drink booze
And whatever I've got, I am eager to lose
I wanna be evil, little evil me
Just as mean and evil as I can be Songwriters: Lester Judson / Raymond Taylor 'Little Cream Soda' by The White Stripes One, two, three, four Well, every highway that I go down seems to be longer
Than the last one that I knew about, oh, well And every girl that I walk around seems to be more of an illusion
Than the last one that I found, oh, well And this old man in front of me wearing canes and ruby rings
Is like containing an explosion when he sings
And with every chance to set himself on fire
He just ends up doin' the same thing Well, each beautiful thing I come across tells me
To stop moving and shake this riddle off, oh, well And there was a time when all I wanted was my ice cream colder
And a little cream soda, oh, well, oh, well And a wooden box and an alley full
Of rocks was all I had to care about
Oh, well, oh, well, oh, well Now my mind is filled with rubber tires and forest fires
And whether I'm a liar
And lots of other situations where I don't know what to do
At which time God screams to me
"There's nothing left for me to tell you."
Nothing left for me to tell you
Nothing left Oh, well, oh, well, oh, well, oh, well
Oh, well, oh, well, oh, well, oh, well Songwriter: Jack White III

Hello, lovelies! Come join me on an existential crisis I am currently experiencing :D Well, not exactly, but I have spent the last few weeks thinking about a little thing called Also before I continue, I just want you to know that the following gif appeared in my search for 'love' in the GIF box: Anyway, back to my age old question of 'love at first sight' vs. gradual love. Which actually works? A vast majority of successful and happy couples/married couples I know say they just knew when they first laid eyes on each other that the other person was the one. It sounds like something that goes beyond physical attraction, and more sensing that someone is right for you (I'm assuming you take into account how you two interact with one another when you first meet/lock eyes, and how natural that all feels). In my personal experience, I sensed from the moment I started speaking with my former partner that there was something there, like a little flicker of magic that grew pretty fast. I knew half way through the second date that I really, really liked him, and it didn't feel like anything I had experienced with anyone else before. Sadly, that relationship had to come to an end and it was for the better, and though that was a bit of a 'love at first sight' situation, the relationship didn't last. Neither did the relationships my friends or family members had, who also believed they all experienced love at first sight. And then there are people you get along with and have things in common with, even people you are able to talk things through with, yet something is missing. I'm seeing someone at the moment and we're both on the same wavelength about things, and we joked about how if we were members of royalty who got married and had to stay married to each other (i.e. a Queen Elizabeth/Prince Phillip situation), we'd be one of the fortunate ones who would make it work and probably end up being very happy together and committed to one another. So naturally, that conversation confused the hell out of me. Is this kind of man husband material? Is simply wanting to be committed the answer? I know there are countless situations where that has not worked, but if I were to delve deeper into all the probabilities of what can and can't happen, this will end up being a thesis. So, in a tinder-fuelled, 'wham bam thank you ma'am' age like this, how does one keep romance alive? Does it just happen? And what works, or makes your heart twerk? What is your experience? Discuss :3

Hello lovelies, old and new- and a warm welcome to the latter. :) Poetry communities will come together like the wind, and go together in a similar fashion. It's got me wondering what it is about poetry/poetry communities/the industry of poetry that makes people so uncertain to get together, write, share, and simply indulge in the works of others? What is that barrier many writers can't cross? What makes them move away from a community, and how do they lose interest when it comes to connecting with other writers, or lose interest in writing poetry altogether? Poetry is one of the most (if not, the most) beautiful literary art form there is, yet the field can be volatile and writers often end up abandoning their love for something so vulnerable and intimate. What do you think will tie a poetry community closer together?

Hey there, Covers! This post isn't going to be as saucy as I lead on in the title, but I do have legitimate questions regarding poetry about the birds and the bees. If you have ever written a poem or poems about mature topics, do you feel comfortable posting them? What do you get concerned about? And do you think the Cove is the right place to post them? Discuss!

I needa get out of Melbourne and just spend around 10 days in Nashville, Tennessee. I want to see the bright lights, see a ton of folk gigs and visit Third Man Records. If you could buy a ticket today and jump on a plane tomorrow, where would the destination be? You don't need to explain why! (also if you live in or have been to Nashville, please give me recommendations.)

Hello friends! So, we've all heard of celebrity poetry: the good, the bad and the Gabbie, but what about poetry from celebrities or notable folks who are yet to find their inner Shakespeare or Angelou? Who out there do you wish would publish a poetry book, and why? It could be anyone from sportsmen to singers, actors to astronauts. For me, it would be Marc Bolan (who is no longer with us but many of his songs were pure poetry and I believe many of them were initially poems), Jack White (who is apparently a poet but is yet to publish any of his work. Why, I don't know. The man appears to have a million jobs and none of them involve poetry), and Pattie Smith, unless she has already. I haven't heard anything about Smith publishing a poetry book but she is one of my favourite writers of all time, so I'd love to read endless poems from her New York arthouse mind. How about you?

I'll start: for my most recent NaPoWriMo poem, I wanted to find a way to describe small fruit growing on a tree without using the words 'popped' or 'protruded' because they weren't right or cute enough. So I just Googled 'hernia pops out called'. Yes I was looking for a cute word. A less weird search I did once was 'train wikipedia'. I'd love to hear your most random incognito-esque Google searches!

Hello friends and beautiful acquaintances... I've been feeling very existential lately, so let's help each other out by exchanging some wisdoms: The best bits of advice I've ever received are the below: From my maternal uncle who's been like a father to me at times 'always be the adult in every situation' - i.e. maintain your maturity and civility regardless of how someone treats you, or how they behave. 'Laziness is a privilege' because it means you can always rely on other people to do your dirty work from you. A smart Honours student told me that. 'Nostalgia is a lie. Nothing ever felt as good as how you remember it'. Some rando on the internet. Watcha got?

I had the most random thought as I logged into the Cove today and saw the Cove's birthday banner on the corner of the page. I've mentioned before that I'm not a horoscope kinda person, but I ended up Googling '27 February star sign' and it turns out the Poetry Cove is a Pisces! (maybe the fish could be its unofficial mascot?) :P So my question to you is, what random fun facts do you know? Share below whenever they come into your head!

Greetings, friends. It feels like yonks since I last posted on the forum. I've spent most of my time in recent weeks lurking in the comments, but didn't have anything interesting or thought-provoking to ask you... until now. Ah, 'overrated'... my favourite buzzword on the internet. It's a term we use to release and vent those pesky opinions we've been bottling up in the back of our minds for so, so long, begging to know if anyone else out there, too, feels the same about *that* annoying song, or *that* vapid movie or novel. So, since this is the Poetry Cove, you know what my question to you is (you would also know if you spent a fraction of a millisecond reading the title of this post, of course). Ok, enough lame jokes for tonight. So, what famous/well known poem do you not understand the hype for, and why? What poem do you find a bit obnoxious or pretentious when others find it breath-taking and riveting, or quite simply, what iconic poem do you think is just, well, not that good. Not necessary famous nor iconic, but I am going to go with the king of mediocre poetry and quite possibly, the grandfather of instapoetry (yep, we have him to thank for that), Robert Lax. Enough said. Ok, kidding :P many of his poems are actually quite good, especially his series focusing on carnival life. Some of his more existential stuff is also pretty good. But then you have (a lot of) stuff like this. Some of it, I get. I get what he's trying to say or do but it's also far too simple to call it 'good poetry' in my opinion. The next poem I'll mention is a bit of a controversial one, 'The Hill We Climb' by Amanda Gorman. I have to preface, it's not a bad poem. In fact I enjoyed listening to it, but I can't help but feel she could have gone for a much better poem to read at the inauguration. I wager she has many great poems, but this was probably the weaker one of the bunch. I felt like THWC was full of cliches, and nothing remarkable nor new was said, which is always disappointing to hear. But I will say, it was honest, level-headed and appropriate for the time and setting. Gorman really did provide a perfect summary of the values and expectations Americans must strive to preserve. And I do have to single out my favourite line from the poem as it is worth mentioning: 'but one thing is certain, if we merge mercy with might, and might with right, then love becomes our legacy in change, our children's birthright.' You can listen to the full poem below, if you haven't heard it already: Curious to know your thoughts. Ball's in your court now, folks, take it away...

You can call this a social experiment. There is no obligation to comment, it's just that I see so many names come and go and so many people I haven't had the opportunity to connect with yet (First 100s and newbies), and I'd just like to know how many people are currently active on the Cove. That's all :) So... starting smashing that like button ;)

As I've mentioned in a previous post, my sense of humour is completely fried. I'm officially in my late 20s and my sense of humour is as bad as a 13-year-old Gen Z-er's. If you're wondering about the kind of content 13-year-old-Gen Z-ers (and myself) are laughing at these days, it's garbage like this: Yes, I'm unironically entertained by this absolute garbage. Also, this might be the first time in post-modern or contemporary history where random = funny. I don't know. It's been a long day at work, or maybe I've just shamed myself in front of 1,000+ poets... So for any other fellow weirdos out there, have you got any spicy memes or premium shit content worth having a giggle over? Feel free to post below and contribute to my mental degeneration. Thank you.

Not at the Cove, of course, you're all lovely. But there's no denying that some poetry communities and slam poetry events can attract some rather pretentious people, especially those with a superiority complex. Have you ever encountered anyone like this? What happened? How did you deal with it? There was a time I definitely felt like I was getting scolded or spoken to like a child, which didn't sit well with me. No other person in this class spoke to me the same way, and I'm pretty self-aware so something was probably up with him. He was talking about his poem once and used a word I hadn't heard before, so I asked him what that meant and he made me feel like the biggest idiot. He even did that thing where he side-eyed everyone else in the room with a bewildered smirk on his face and said 'um... you don't know what [word] means?' No, Bobby. I can't know everything. That was my experience, now share yours!
