When I write something I ask myself, how I would feel if I received that comment. If the answer is not good, then I'll rewrite it. It's always good to be polite and I think you should always end the comment with a positive statement, that being said if the piece asks for criticism then you should be as hard as you like and if the author gets upset then they shouldn't have asked for feedback in the first place.

I guess she's just an imaginary companion who is sharing whatever experience I'm writing about. She's still an evolving character, she may be a combination of people I've known.

Not everything I write is autobiographical,I like to invent stuff although much of what I write is observational. I do have one character that I like to use in some of my poems, I just refer to her as 'she' but she's not a real person, however the narrator / speaker is usually myself.

@Rich ask yourself what is your voice, rather than trying to find it. You already have it. What makes you angry enough to have an argument with another person? What jokes make you laugh? What could you debate for hours? This is your voice. Don't be afraid to write what you truly feel and don't worry what others think about it. Probably your best voice is what you have now, when you are just starting out, before you've learned the tricks of the trade. Zen Buddhists call this 'the beginners mind'. Write as much as you can now before it's too late hahaha

I guess it depends on how much you you need to get that poem out there. I always used to say that if you're not offending anyone then you're not saying anything interesting. Hahaha I don't really believe that so much now but if you feel the need to write about stuff not suitable for kids then do it. If you're worried about people who know you, well then they should understand you well enough to accept your art for what it is. As for poetry cove the right place to put it? you'll have to ask the admins

Apart fro the wise words of @Shen Friebe, I would add that an iconic poem should be something that represents a certain era or movement, that is when you read or hear that poem immediately you know it is representative of the beat generation or classical Greek poetry, as two examples
